Effective Jan 2026, 37 cities now participate in 144hr visa-free transit for 54 passport holders. New additions include Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Harbin, and Kunming. Layovers at any of their airports now qualify.

Palace Museum now requires booking exactly 7 days ahead, down from 30 days. Slots open at 8am daily. Foreign passport holders must book via the official WeChat Mini Program — third-party booking sites do not work.

After delays in late 2025, most Chinese consulates have returned to standard Z visa processing times. Guangzhou and Los Angeles consulates still running 15–20 days. Plan accordingly if applying via those offices.

Police stations across Beijing and Shanghai have been strictly enforcing the 24-hour registration rule for new arrivals. Hotels register automatically. AirBnB and private rentals: you must go to the local police station yourself within 24 hours of arrival.

DiDi's international app (separate from the Chinese app) now works in 100+ Chinese cities with foreign Visa/Mastercard. Download 'DiDi — Ride Hailing App' (international version) before arrival. Prices ~20% higher than local app.

Shanghai Museum has moved from walk-in free entry to pre-booked free tickets only. Book via the museum's official WeChat Mini Program 1–3 days ahead. 1,500 slots/day. Line-up slots are still available for same-day entry.

ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Astrill remain partially functional for most users. Success rate varies by ISP and location. Best practice: install and test before arriving. Mobile data tends to be more VPN-friendly than hotel/office WiFi.
